Over the past few months, it’s looked like Ellen DeGeneres was on the verge of being “cancelled,” as dozens of current and former employees have come forward to accuse her of turning a blind eye to racism, intimidation, and even sexual misconduct on the set of her talk show.
Now, however, DeGeneres appears to have gotten the last laugh over those who have been trying to take her down, as the premiere of the new season of her talk show on Monday scored the highest ratings she’s garnered in years.
The New York Post reported that Monday’s episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” scored the highest season premiere ratings the talk show has had since 2016. While the show’s overnight Nielsen household rating of 1.9 was steady with the overall ratings for the fall 2019 premiere, it ranked No. 1 in the crucial ad demographic of adults aged 25 to 54, with a 0.9 rating, an increase from last year’s 0.8.
On top of that, DeGeneres’ show beat out all talk shows in what’s arguably the most-coveted ad demo: Female viewers ages 18 to 34, earning a 0.6, and nailing ages 18 to 49 with a 0.8. The show even managed to tie with “The View” at 1.1 for women viewers ages 25 to 54.
Only time will tell whether this ratings spike was due to loyal viewers tuning in, or naysayers hoping to see DeGeneres fall, however.
During her opening monologue, DeGeneres immediately addressed the scandals that have plagued her in the past few months.
“As you may have heard this summer, there were allegations of a toxic work environment at our show and then there was an investigation. I learned that things happened here that never should’ve happened,” DeGeneres said. “I take that very seriously, and I want to say I’m so sorry to the people who were affected.”
The talk show host went on to recognize her “position of privilege and power” and to take “responsibility for what happens at my show.” She also swore to fans that she is the same person that they have come to love onscreen.
“The truth is I am that person that you see on TV. I am also a lot of other things,” DeGeneres noted. “Sometimes I get sad, I get mad, I get anxious, I get frustrated, I get impatient, and I am working on all of that.”
