Fans of the singer Rihanna are calling for her to be named as Queen Elizabeth’s replacement as Barbados’ head of state amid as the island launches a bid to be named a republic in 2021.

Fox News reported that Rihanna, known for singing songs like “Umbrella” and “Work,” was born and raised in the Caribbean island. This came after Barbados Governor-General Sandra Mason announced on Tuesday that the island would be dropping the Queen as its’ head of state next year. She added that Barbados will move “toward full sovereignty and become a Republic” by November 30, 2021 on the country’s 55th anniversary of independence from the British empire.

“Having attained Independence over half a century ago, our country can be in no doubt about its capacity for self-governance. The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind,” Mason said, according to ABC News. “Barbadians want a Barbadian Head of State. This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving.”

Fans responded by demanding that Barbados replace the Queen with Rihanna as head of state.

“It’s time for Barbados to remove Queen Elizabeth as Head of State, in favor of Queen Robyn Rihanna,” one fan requested, while another outright demanded, “Replace her with Rihanna, you cowards!”

“Barbados should make Rihanna their new head of state,” a third fan wrote. “No but really good on them separating themselves from the queen. I’d love to see more island nations follow suit.”

A fourth fan said that dropping the Queen is “an important first step to installing Rihanna as the God Empress of Barbados.”

“Finally. Everybody knows Rihanna is the true sovereign of Barbados,” another fan declared, with yet another one writing, “I know I’m not from Barbados, so my opinion doesn’t really count, but I’d like to nominate @rihanna as Barbadian Head of State.”

Calls for Rihanna to be named as Barbados’ head of state are not as far-fetched as they seem. Back in 2018, the singer was named Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Barbados, a responsibility that is dedicated to promoting tourism, education and investment in the island nation.
