Back in July, Elvis Presley’s grandson Benjamin Keough fatally shot [1] himself in his family’s mansion after an argument with his girlfriend. Now, the results of his autopsy have been released, and they give tragic new insight into his final hours.
Daily Mail [2] reported that an autopsy found that Keough had cocaine and alcohol in his system at the time of his death. Though it is unclear just how much cocaine and alcohol was in his system, officials with the LA County Coroner’s office found traces of both.
Surveillance footage from his family’s home shows him arguing in the backyard with his girlfriend, Diana Pinto. He then walked inside and locked himself in the bathroom before putting a gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger.
Pinto sprinted inside when she heard the gunshot and had to use a bobby pin to break into the locked bathroom. It was then that she found Keough’s body and called the police.
Keough, who was the son of Lisa Marie Presley, had tried to commit suicide six months before his death, and he had done a three week stint in rehab for months prior to his passing. He had gone to rehab three times before, but never actually completed a stint there.
The autopsy makes reference to Keough’s history of drug abuse and his battle against depression. The coroner’s office said that Keough had bouts of “major depression” in which he would spend days in the bedroom of his home.
After Keough’s death, Lisa Marie’s manager Roger Widynowski told PEOPLE [3] that she was “beyond devastated.”
“She is completely heartbroken, inconsolable and beyond devastated but trying to stay strong for her 11-year-old twins and her oldest daughter Riley,” Widynowski said. “She adored that boy. He was the love of her life.”
Lisa Marie had previously talked about how much Keough looked like her late father.
“Ben does look so much like Elvis. He was at the Opry and was the quiet storm behind the stage,” she said back in 2012. “Everybody turned around and looked when he was over there. Everybody was grabbing him for a photo because it is just uncanny.”
