Prince William and Kate Middleton are in mourning this week after their beloved dog Lupo passed away.

William and Kate took to Instagram on Sunday to share the tragic news about their dog, which had been given to them as a Christmas present back in 2011. Entertainment Tonight reported that Lupo had been bred from a dog belonging to Kate’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton.

“Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away,” William and Kate wrote alongside a photo of the dog. “He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much. – W & C.”

Kate’s brother James Middleton took to Instagram to pay tribute to Lupo as well.

“Nothing can ever prepare you for the loss of a dog,” he wrote. “For those who have never had a dog, it might be hard to understand the loss. However for those who have loved a dog know the truth: a dog is not just a pet; it is a member of the family, a best friend, a loyal companion, a teacher and a therapist.”

“There isn’t much of a rule book on how to grieve for a dog, but I’ve said a prayer, lit a candle and taken Ella (Mum) for a long walk to spend time remembering Lupo,” James continued. “Rest in peace Lupo. Tilly & Mini will be waiting for you. You will always be remembered and your legacy will live on forever. Good Boy .”

Lupo was a beloved member of William and Kate’s family and made multiple appearances in official portraits over the years, including right after Prince George was born. In fact, Lupo helped to choose George’s name! William and Kate have said that they scattered pieces of paper with different names on them all over the floor, and Lupo stopped when he reached “George,” clueing them in that this was the name they should choose for their oldest son.

This is undoubtedly a difficult loss for George, 7, as it is for his two younger siblings, Princess Charlotte, 5, and Prince Louis, 2. Please join us in saying a prayer for their family during this difficult time!
