New Orleans, LA – A Tulane Police Officer was shot and killed while working at a high school basketball game on Friday night.

Authorities say 38-year-old Corporal Martinus Mitchum was shot while providing security at George Washington Carver High School in the 3000 block of Higgins Boulevard.

The New Orleans Police Department said the suspect, identified as 35-year-old John Shallerhorn, arrived at the school and was refused entry for not wearing a mask. A physical altercation broke out with a school employee and Corporal Mitchum intervened and escorted Shallerhorn out.

As Shallerhorn was leaving, he shot Corporal Mitchum twice and then placed his weapon on the ground to be taken into custody. Investigators say just moments before the suspect entered the school he robbed a man at gunpoint in the parking lot. He was booked for armed robbery and 1st degree murder of a policeman.

Tulane Police Chief Kirk Bouyelas said in a statement, “we are deeply saddened by the senseless and tragic death of TUPD Corporal Martinus Mitchum. Corporal Mitchum was a dedicated police professional who had a heart of service for the Tulane community. We have reached out to his family and are providing support to his fellow officers during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and with all the fellow officers with whom he served.”
