The Alabama Secretary of State, Republican John Merrill, has ruled out a 2022 US Senate run after finally admitting an affair with a legal assistant. The announcement followed a Patrick Howley National File story including audio and text messages detailing the affair.

Merrill, married with children, had initially denied the affair as a ploy to end his bid for the Senate.

“People are attempting to use this to either advance the candidacy of other people, or they are doing it primarily to harm me and my family,” he said Tuesday in a radio interview. “It’s very frustrating and very sad.”

The woman, Cesaire McPherson, appeared on PC Radio with Stew Peters yesterday and told her side of the story:

After first attacking McPherson as a “stalker,” on Wednesday Merrill said: “After much prayer, reflection, and conversations with my wife, Cindy, I have decided that I will not be a candidate for any office in 2022.”

Beyond the affair, McPherson alleged Merrill made racists comments, telling the National File “He might act like he likes black people, but he’s really racist. Real bad racist…(He would say) ‘The colored folks. He was loved by all the coloreds.’…’And they go around thinking everything is supposed to be there’s, and given to them, and all this and that…the black people should be appreciative’”

The Alabama Democrats Executive Director Wade Perry weighed in on Twitter saying, “With the exception of the use of state resources to facilitate his affair, Merrill’s personal life and conduct are just that – personal. The Democratic Party is much more concerned about the allegation that he regularly referred to African American judges and citizens in Alabama as ‘The Coloreds’. If true, he must apologize AND resign immediately.”
