Oakland Refunds The Police After Defunding Them Last Year As Violent Crime Soars

After the movement to defund the police, the Oakland City Council has decided that maybe they acted prematurely and voted unanimously on Monday to refund the Oakland City Police Department by allocating $10 million to their budget.

The Oakland Police Department was forced to cut officers and various programs after their budget was cut by over $25 million and the result has been an increase in crime across the city. Police Chief LaRonne Armstrong said that the department is struggling and is in desperate need of resources.

So far in 2021 Oakland has seen an increase in homicides, shootings, carjacking’s, and robberies.

Compared to the same time last year…

Homicides have gone from 13 to 41.

Shootings have gone from 79 to 159.

Carjacking’s have gone from 57 to 149.

Robberies have gone from 226 to 340.

“This city has to value the lives of our community members. We need resources and we need the community’s help to address violence. Police can’t do it alone.” – Chief Armstrong
