Kevin McCarthy Throws Liz Cheney Under A Bus

Like Liz Cheney or not, and this writer does, she is on the wrong side of the smart money in the current Republican Party. She will likely lose her GOP leadership slot over it and could very well lose her primary next year. Though her local support is not shabby.

All because she will not grovel to the personality cult of Donald Trump, as the solid majority of the GOP does. Her stance may be brave and noble, but it is probably a political kamikaze run.

FNC: “Cheney’s position in the GOP leadership is now in jeopardy. A senior House GOP leadership source tells Fox it is ‘more than likely’ there will be vote on Cheney’s future when the House returns to session next week.

“With Cheney, a long, simmering battle between pro-Trump and anti-Trump Republicans is approaching a tipping point. This debate slashes through the heart of the GOP, touches on the assertion by former President Donald Trump that he actually won the 2020 election and curves through the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol…

“This fight over Cheney and the core of the party will likely reach a crescendo when Congress returns in a week, if not before. But Cheney’s future will say a lot about the direction of the Republican party – and serve as a barometer on President Trump’s muscle. One source told Fox, ‘She continues to raise issues with the former president’ and noted that ‘if you’re out of sync with Trump,’ you’re not in sync with the Republican Conference.”

“When you have only so much time, she wants to talk about Trump, not the people who are running the country into the ground,” said another Republican source who took part in a recent GOP issues conference.

“It’s a problem if you have an issues conferences and the biggest issue which comes out of it is her,” anonymously kvetched one senior Republican. It gets worse for Cheney.

Yahoo News: “In off-air audio of a Tuesday morning Fox News appearance obtained by Axios, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy could be heard telling host Steve Doocy of the Wyoming congresswoman, “I think she’s got real problems…I’ve had it with her. You know, I’ve lost confidence. … Well, someone just has to bring a motion, but I assume that will probably take place.” On the air McCarthy said this, “I have heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair, to carry out the message. We all need to be working as one if we’re able to win the majority.”

A Cheney spokesperson responded to McCarthy’s comments on Tuesday, “This is about whether the Republican Party is going to perpetuate lies about the 2020 election and attempt to whitewash what happened on Jan 6. Liz will not do that. That is the issue.” Cheney herself said in a tweet, “The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law and poisoning our democratic system.”

Some Republicans are worried that the gender issue on this could hurt them. “Sometimes we don’t always do the right thing with women in leadership,” conceded one House Republican to press. That may be true, but it’s likely not enough to save Liz Cheney’s leadership slot.
