Liz Cheney Reveals Why She Didn’t Rally Support In Vote That Removed Her From Leadership Role

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) was removed from her leadership role by Republicans earlier this month after she voted to impeach former President Donald Trump. Now, Cheney is speaking out to reveal why she didn’t rally support for herself going into this vote.

“It became clear that to stay in that position, I would have to perpetuate the ‘big lie,’” Cheney told The Star Tribune [1]. “I would have to be willing to go along with the idea that the election was stolen.”

Before the vote, Cheney quoted John 8:32, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” She then added, “If you’re looking for leaders who will perpetuate the lie, then I’m not your person.”

Cheney was then removed from her leadership position.

“I had to make a decision about whether or not it was more important to be a member of the House leadership or more important to fight for Wyoming’s values and principles and for the restoration of the party,” she said.

Cheney went on to say that her decision to put up little fight when her leadership role was threatened for the second time was not politically motivated.

“It’s not a political calculation,” she said. “There are other political calculations that would have been much easier.”

To this day, Cheney is still very much against Trump.

“Look at what Kevin McCarthy is doing, what Steve Scalise is doing. They are embracing President Trump,” she said this week. “They are essentially ignoring the very grave things that he did on Jan. 6, and I’m not willing to do that.”

Cheney is also supporting a congressional commission to look into the Capitol riots that took place on January 6.

“I don’t think anybody should put politics above the need for that commission,” she said.

“There certainly was a period of time after Jan. 6 … where it looked like we really could just move forward,” she continued. “Or we could say that what happened on Jan. 6 happened, we had the impeachment vote, let’s look to the future.”

In Cheney’s mind, that future never materialized.
