Winston Douglas is a bus driver for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), and has seen his fair share of interesting stories from the job. But he never anticipated the event that unfolded on a Sunday morning in September 2018.
63 year old Terri Bradley was using a walker to cross the street, when Gerald Jones walked up behind her and began repeatedly stabbing her with a large kitchen knife. Passenger June Jarrett watched in horror as the young man sliced the woman over and over. “I’m screaming at him to stop, saying, ‘You’re going to kill her.’ And he looks up at me and just continues to stab her,” Jarrett told WSB-TV [1].

Stunned, Douglas threw the bus into park and rushed out the door to assist the woman. He grabbed a big stick and began beating the man across his back until he stopped stabbing the woman, who was writhing on the ground and screaming in pain. Jones took off running, while Douglas and another passenger chased after him, eventually catching up and detaining him until police arrived.
“We hog-tied him with an extension cord a bystander who was driving down the road threw to us,” said Montez Daughtery, who helped Douglas restrain the attacker.
The other passengers on the bus rushed off to offer whatever aid they could to Bradley while they waited for emergency services to arrive. Miraculously, the grandmother survived the 20 knife wounds she received to her neck, hand, and thigh.
Gerald Jones was arrested and charged in the attack, pleading guilty to all charges. His mother said he was prescribed medication to control his violent tendencies, but had gone off them.
“He was going to kill her. He would have killed her if it had not been for him [Douglas],” Jarrett said.
After being released from the hospital, Douglas and his one-year-old daughter stopped by Bradley’s house to check on her recovery. Overcome with emotion when she saw Douglas walk in with a bouquet of flowers, Terri asked her son to help her stand and greet her rescuer.
“No, you don’t have to get up,” Douglas told READERS DIGEST [4] he said to the woman.
But Bradley insisted, and as she wrapped her arms around Douglas, she buried her head in his chest and sobbed “Thank you, Jesus. Glory. You’re all I had to help me.”
Douglass tried to brush off his actions and those that anyone would have done, but Terri’s son Derrick strongly disagreed.
“Not everyone would have done what you did,” he asserted.
