October 29th at 5:00 p.m. was reportedly the deadline for municipal employees in New York City to show proof that they’d at least received one of their Covid vaccination shots. However, reports indicate that potentially thousands of city employees – such as police officers, firefighters, and garbage collectors – aren’t budging on the matter.

And there are concerns that come November 1st, residents of the Big Apple could see the trash piling up, the fire stations closed, and fewer police and ambulances on the streets.

The sentiments regarding mandated vaccines for public employees in the city have already resulted in irate exchanges, such as one from October 29th where six firefighters from Ladder 113 in Brooklyn parked a firetruck outside State Senator Zellnor Myrie’s office and confronted a staff member of the senator’s about the vaccine mandate.

Said firefighters reportedly conveyed that Senator Myrie and his staff would have “blood on their hands” if nothing was done about the vaccine mandate, citing staff shortages and longer response times due to employees being dismissed.

Police Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch has warned that the city adopting a strict deadline for vaccination “sets the city up for a real crisis,” due to how it would impact the NYPD. Andrew Ansbro, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, mirrored Lynch’s sentiments by noting that increased response times would “be a death sentence to some people.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio proclaims on October 28th that he has a contingency plan in the event numerous public employees continue to hold out, saying that he’ll impose mandatory overtime and additional shifts for the vaccinated employees.

As of October 27th, reportedly nearly a fifth of all city employees had yet to receive at least one Covid vaccine dose. A breakdown by each sect includes approximately 21% of police personnel, 29% of firefighters and EMS workers, and 33% of sanitation workers.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea shared a video message with officers on October 27th reminding them of the upcoming deadline and the ramifications for officers not adhering:

“On Monday, when this thing really starts being enforced, we’re going to check the vaccination status and if you’re not vaccinated, no pay and you’re going to be not able to work. I don’t think anyone wants that to happen. I don’t think you want it to happen. I certainly don’t. We need you out there.”

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro confirmed that they’re prepared to shut down as many as 20% of their fire companies and have 20% fewer ambulances in service while addressing the potential staff shortages that will come with firefighters opting not to be vaccinated:

“The department must manage the unfortunate fact that a portion of our workforce has refused to comply with a vaccine mandate for all city employees.”
