Former President Donald sent a brutal message to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) over the weekend, saying that he would “beat” him if the two end up going against each other run the Republican Primary in 2024.
“If I faced him, I’d beat him like I would beat everyone else,” Trump told Yahoo Finance Live.
Despite all the buzz around DeSantis, however, Trump is not expecting him to run.
“I think most people would drop out, I think he would drop out,” Trump said.
Though speculation has mounted in recent weeks that DeSantis would be a contender in 2024, he claimed as recently as last week that he is not thinking about running for president and is solely focused on winning reelection as governor in 2024.
“I’m not considering anything beyond doing my job,” DeSantis told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “We’ve got a lot of stuff going on in Florida. I’m going to be running for reelection next year and we’re also working on a lot of things in the state beyond just the governor’s race.”
A spokeswoman for DeSantis told The Hill that “he’s focused on Florida and doing his job as the governor of our state.” She cited comments he made last month, when he called speculation regarding a presidential bid “purely manufactured.”
“I just do my job. You know, we work hard, obviously, our state has led on a lot of things, including on this [monoclonal antibody treatment],” he said at the time. “Now other states are copying us. But that’s what it’s really all about. Just helping folks here. I hear all this stuff and honestly, it’s nonsense. So, you know, I don’t really know what to say to rumors.”
Though Trump has yet to officially announce that he will run in 2024, he’s repeatedly hinted that he plans to do just that. Trump has previously said that his supporters will be “very happy” with his decision about 2024.
“I love our country,” he said in a recent interview with Fox News host Greg Gutfeld. “I think you’ll be very happy. I would say two, three years ago you might not have been that happy but now I think you’d be happy… I’ll make a decision in the not-so-distant future.”
When asked directly if he planned to run in 2024 in another Fox News interview, Trump indicated that he’s have no choice, given how bad Joe Biden has been.
“I don’t think we’re going to have a choice,” Trump said. “It is disgraceful.”
As 2024 gets closer, it will certainly be interesting to see how things shake out for both Trump and DeSantis. Whether they ultimately run or not, they are both the clear Republican frontrunners for that race at this time.
