JUST IN: Ford Mandates Every Salaried Employee Get Vaccinated

Ford Motor Co. has just informed all salaried employees that they have until December 8 of this year to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Any employee who is unvaccinated past that date and has not obtained a medical or religious exemption will be placed on unpaid leave.

Ford executives have reportedly spent months trying to decide whether to mandate the vaccine or not, but they have ultimately decided to do so.

“The health and safety of our workforce remains our top priority and we have been very encouraged by the support of our employees to comply with our protocols, including the more than 84-percent of U.S. salaried employees who are already vaccinated,” a Ford spokesperson told Fox Business [2], adding that the deadline “also aligns with federal contractor guidelines.”

The spokesperson is referring to the fact that President Joe Biden has mandated that all federal contractors be fully vaccinated work forces by December 8.

The mandate put in place by Ford for salaried workers will reportedly impact around 31,000 people, however, the company’s 57,000 hourly workers in the U.S. should expect vaccine and testing requirements pushed by the feds to be coming for them soon as well.

“We are continuing to evaluate our policy for employees in our manufacturing locations, parts depots and Ford Credit, including analyzing federal and collective bargaining requirements,” the Ford spokesperson added, according to Detroit News [3].

While The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has been encouraging members to get vaccinated, it has opposed vaccine mandates.

“The majority of the U.S. hourly workforce will be included under the OSHA-ETS guidelines which have yet to be released and is subject to bargaining with the UAW,” the statement continued. “How the OSHA requirements will apply is currently being reviewed and discussed with union leadership.”

On Wednesday, UAW spokesman Brian Rothenberg, “Our position continues to be that we strongly encourage members to get vaccinated but understand that there are reasons such as health-related or religious reasons that they can’t.”

While some automotive companies have enacted similar vaccine mandates to this one, others have resisted. Once such company that is not mandating vaccines is Subaru of Indiana Automotive.

“While we have strongly encouraged our associates to get vaccinated for COVID-19 and have hosted many on-site vaccination clinics, it is not mandated at this time,” said a spokesperson for this company. “Those who have not been vaccinated are required to continue wearing a mask inside our facilities.”
