Democrats were humiliated on Tuesday night when Republican Glenn Youngkin handily defeated the leftwing candidate Terry McAuliffe in the gubernatorial race. Now, former President Donald Trump is speaking out to celebrate Youngkin’s win, and to take partial credit for it.

“I’ve heard Virginia is blue, but I’ve never believed it was blue,” Trump said this morning, according to The Hill. “Without MAGA he would have lost by 15 points, more … instead of giving us credit they say, ‘oh he’s more popular than [Trump].'”

Trump also doubled down in an official statement posted to Twitter.

“I would like to thank my BASE for coming out in force and voting for Glenn Youngkin,” Trump said. “Without you, he would not have been close to winning. The MAGA movement is bigger and stronger than ever before.”

“Glenn will be a great governor,” Trump added. “Thank you to the people of the Commonwealth of Virginia and, most particularly, to our incredible MAGA voters!”

Trump also continued to push his claim that there was election fraud in Virginia during the 2020 race between himself and Joe Biden.

“I don’t believe we lost Virginia and I think they tried to get away with murder in Fairfax,” Trump reportedly said Wednesday morning. “They were doing something in Fairfax then gave up — too many eyes.”

Youngkin had said he was “honored” when Trump endorsed him earlier in this race, but he rarely mentioned him since then.

“Let’s climb that hill together,” Youngkin said after his victory. “Let’s reinvigorate our future, let’s reinvigorate this amazing commonwealth of Virginia. Together, together, together, together we can build a new day, a new day for Virginians where yes, we soar and we never settle.”

The chairman of the Republican Study Committee sent out a memo to Republicans in the wake of this election saying that Youngkin’s successful campaign strategy should serve as a model to GOP candidates going into midterms next year.

“Parents brought real energy in Virginia, and we would be wise to listen and seek to understand their concerns,” Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) wrote. “Those concerns cannot be addressed only with policies we traditionally associate with ‘education.’”

Banks added that Youngkin’s victory shows that mandates must be ended, law enforcement should be supported and the GOP should continue to spread the word to the American people about “the failures of the Biden economy.”

Democrats had been cocky going into the Virginia gubernatorial race, but coming out of it, they might want to start getting ready for a red wave.
