Newt Gingrich Eviscerates Liz Cheney For Attacking Republicans After Getting Crushed In Primary

The former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is speaking out this week to slam Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) after she responded to her brutal primary defeat last week by bashing Republicans.

After getting crushed by Harriet Hagerman, who was backed by former President Donald Trump, Cheney whined that the Republican Party is “very sick.”

“It says that clearly [Trump’s] hold is very strong among some portions of the Republican Party. My state of Wyoming is not necessarily a representative sample of the party,” Cheney told ABC News [1]. “I think it says a couple of things. I think it says people continue to believe the lie. They continue to believe what he’s saying, which is dangerous.”

“I think it also tells you that large portions of our party, including the leadership of our party, is very sick,” she added.

This did not sit well with Gingrich, who fired back in an interview with Fox News [2].

“To go back home to the people that you claim to represent, to only get 29% support and then decide that the other 61 that they’re the ones who are wrong,” he said. “They’re the ones who are sick. I think that Liz has arrogated to herself a standard of being the moral judge of millions and millions of Americans, around 73 or 75 million Americans who voted for Trump because they’re ‘sick.’ They voted for Trump because they deeply dislike the establishment. ”

“And no matter what you tell them about Trump, they dislike the establishment even more,” Gingrich continued. “And so it’s amazing to me that nobody who’s in the anti-Trump faction has stopped to say, ‘what is it we’re doing that repels so many Americans?’ Wyoming’s a great example.”

“The Cheney name was at one time magic,” he concluded. “Now it doesn’t just get beat, it gets humiliated. I mean, 29% is a sign that – take away the Democrats who switched parties to vote for her – she got probably one in every four Republicans. It’s amazing. So I don’t take what she says very seriously.”

Daily Mail [3] reported that since Cheney’s primary defeat, she’s launched a new political action committee that will fight to defeat lawmakers who backed Trump’s claims that the election was rigged.

“I’m going to be very focused on working to ensure that we do everything we can not to elect election deniers,” Cheney said. “We’ve got election deniers that have been nominated for really important positions all across the country. And I’m going to work against those people. I’m going to work to support their opponents.”

Cheney specifically called out Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Josh Hawley (R-MI) as potential targets, claiming that they “took steps that fundamentally threatened the constitutional order and structure in the aftermath of the last election.”

Cruz responded through a spokesman who said that he “doesn’t need or want soon-to-be-former Rep. Liz Cheney’s endorsement, and he wishes her the best of luck in the 2024 Democrat presidential primary.”

Meanwhile, a Hawley spokesperson simply said that “we wish her the best.”
