Home Alone 2 is known for being one of the most popular Christmas movies of all time, but it’s not an enjoyable time of year for actress Brenda Fricker, who played “the Pigeon Lady” in the 1992 movie.

The 75 year-old Oscar-winner admitted in a new interview with The Ray D’Arcy Show that Christmas is typically a “very dark” time of year for her because she lives alone.

“I would be lying if I said that it would be a nice and happy Christmas because … I’m old and I live alone. It can be very dark,” Fricker said, adding that she usually spends the holiday by herself.

“I just turn the phone off and put the blinds down. I do pre-record some good programs, and I have my dog and I get myself through it that way,” the Irish actress continued. “I don’t want to be sounding kind of negative but it is a different kind of Christmas, that’s all.”

Despite this, Fricker said that Christmas isn’t the hardest holiday for her to get through.

“I don’t find Christmas all that difficult. What I do find very difficult is New Year’s Eve,” she said, explaining there’s “no one to turn around to hug or smile at” when she hears the church bells in her town ringing at midnight.

“I can’t get away from the bells,” Fricker added.

When host Ray D’Arcy said that it’s ironic that families around the world will be watching Home Alone 2 over Christmas while Fricker is alone, she disagreed.

“Well, the pigeon lady was very much on her own,” she pointed out.

Later in the interview, Fricker said that while she has not seen or spoken to her former Home Alone 2 costar Macauley Culkin, she does think of him from time to time.

“I worry about him, but I’m not in touch with him,” she said.

Aside from Home Alone 2, Fricker has appeared in over 30 movies and television shows, including My Left Foot, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1989. In 2014, however, she said it was unlikely that she would act again.

“I’m semi-retired now,” she said according to The Herald. “I’ve been 40 years in the business, so no.”
