Americans living in the northeastern part of the United States were given a major treat today as the Air Force Thunderbirds and the Navy’s Blue Angels teamed up for a flyover to honor first responders and emergency workers who are still on the frontlines amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

Fox News reported that the flyover started around noon ET over the George Washington Bridge between New Jersey and Manhattan, continuing over the rest of New York City before soaring over parts of Long Island and Connecticut. The planes then moved south to fly in and around the cities of Trenton, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware.

“We are truly excited to take to the skies with our Navy counterparts for a nation-wide tribute to the men and women keeping our communities safe.” Air Force Lt. Col. John Caldwell said as he announced the tribute earlier this week. “We hope to give Americans a touching display of American resolve that honors those serving on the frontline of our fight with COVID-19.”

Caldwell took part in the flyover today, serving as Thunderbird 1 and mission commander for it. Cmdr. Brian Kesselring, Blue Angels commanding officer and flight leader, also spoke out to praise those working on the frontlines, saying that it was an honor to have the chance to pay tribute to them.

“We are incredibly honored to have the opportunity to salute those working on the frontline of the COVID-19 response, we are in awe of your strength and resilience,” he said. “Thank you to all of those in essential industries keeping our nation moving forward. We will get through this. We are all in this together.”

Don’t worry if you missed out on today’s flyover, because both teams said that more of these tributes are planned for across the United States in the coming weeks. Today’s mission was given the fitting social media hashtag of #AmericaStrong, which is exactly what we need to be right now. Times may seem hard right now, but we as a nation will get through this, and the best way to do this is to come together as one, as #AmericaStrong!
