Over the past few weeks, rumors have been swirling that Queen Elizabeth will be stepping down from the throne after her 95th birthday next year so that her 72 year-old son Prince Charles can be king. Now, however, palace insiders are saying that these rumors are false, as the Queen will “never abdicate” because “it is simply not in her DNA to abandon her people or duty.”

“As a young woman she vowed to serve until her death and that is what she plans to do,” a source told Vanity Fair. “She would never abdicate — to her, it is a dirty word never to be uttered in her presence.”

The Queen’s biographer Sally Bedell Smith agreed that she will never abdicate the throne.

“Her Majesty will most assuredly not step down when she turns 95 in April 2021, although with the Platinum Jubliee to follow in 2022, she’ll likely want to celebrate her birthday with minimum fuss,” she said. “Unless she becomes incapacitated mentally or physically (which would trigger the Regency Act), she will remain queen until her death.”

This comes after Buckingham Palace’s culture secretary Oliver Dowden announced a four-day “blockbuster weekend of celebrations” to celebrate Elizabeth’s 70-year reign in 2022, which appeared to put an end to any rumors of a potential abdication. This will be the first time a British monarch has ever made it to seventy years on the throne.

“The Platinum Jubliee offers an opportunity for the Queen to express her thanks for the support and loyalty Her Majesty has received throughout her reign,” said a Buckingham Palace spokesman. “The Queen hopes that as many people as possible will have the opportunity to join the celebrations.”

Buckingham Palace sources said that the Queen, “who is in robust health… is looking forward to a national celebration in 2022.”

Other royal experts, however, are still convinced that the Queen will be abdicating her throne next year.

“I still firmly believe when the Queen becomes 95, that she will step down,” said royal expert Robert Jobson, according to Page Six.

Jack Royston, a royal reporter for Newsweek, agreed with him.

“I think she won’t want to,” he explained. “But realistically she will get to a point where she has handed over everything to Charles and then how do you look your son in the eye and tell him he is not going to be King?”

Only time will tell if the Queen does step down, or if she decides to remain on the throne.
