WASHINGTON, DC – According to reports, several defendants held in custody for alleged crimes committed during the January 6th incident at the Capitol were removed from their cells on stretchers on November 11th.
The incident reportedly began when one of the January 6th defendants allegedly refused to wear a mask inside of the jail, which family members of Kelly Meggs – who is being detained at the DC Jail – told Meggs attorney.
A court filing regarding the incident notes that the family of Meggs told attorney Jonathon Moseley that the response to the detainee not wearing a face-covering led jail staff to disperse what’s likely OC spray – which wound up going through the vents and harming other detainees.
“They sprayed mace or some type of gas at an inmate and kept missing so it went into an intake that fed into other cells and the lady with the key left because she didn’t like the gas, so the inmates in the cells who were being fed the gas from that intake were locked in for like 15 minutes while it was going into their rooms and they couldn’t see/breathe.”
The court filing added that as many as “three detainees were taken out on stretchers” as a result of the incident. Said impact was also reiterated by Julie Kelly, a contributor for American Greatness, who took to Twitter saying the incident was sparked over face coverings and turned into an attack launched by jail staff.
“Getting numerous reports of a dispute in the DC Gulag over face masks. Several prison guards then attacked J6 detainees with tear gas, quickly filling the pod with chemical spray. Men struggled to breathe—I’m told three detainees have been taken out in stretchers. Will update.”

Meggs attorney pointed out in the filing that his client wasn’t one of the ones impacted by the November 11th incident but urged the court to see if the Bureau of Prisons and Congress already have access to funds or if some can be allocated to repair or upgrade the jail – such as ventilation systems – in light of the incident.
We at Red Voice Media have previously reported on the growing scrutiny surrounding the conditions of the DC Jail. A surprise inspection conducted by the U.S. Marshals revealed ostensibly cruel practices being conducted against detainees – such as water being shut off for days at a time.
