The First Lady Jill Biden admitted on Monday that she is “disappointed” in Democrat lawmakers after they gave her the bad news that her husband Joe Biden’s plan for tuition-free community college is no longer being considered as they try to save his massive economic and climate plan.

“One year ago, I told this group that Joe, my husband Joe, was going to fight for community colleges,” Jill said while speaking at the Community College National Legislative Summit in Washington D.C. this morning, according to The New York Times. “But Joe has also had to make compromises. Congress hasn’t passed the Build Back Better legislation — yet. And free community college is no longer a part of that package.”

“We knew this wouldn’t be easy,” she added. “Still, like you, I was disappointed. Because, like you, these aren’t just bills or budgets to me, to you, right? We know what they mean for real people, for our students. It was a real lesson in human nature that some people just don’t get that.”

Jill was known to be invested in this issue, as she continues to work as an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College. Last summer, she praised her students for their hard work and resiliency throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My students work incredibly hard to make it to class, often between work and raising families,” she told Good Housekeeping back in August. “They want to learn.”

President Biden had warned last month that free community college would likely be cut from the package.

“There’s two really big components that I feel strongly about that I’m not sure I can get in the package,” Biden told reporters in January. “One is the child care tax credit, and the other is help for cost of community colleges.”

In her comments this morning, Jill pledged to continue to push for community college benefits to be put into future initiatives.

“Too often, we treat what happens in our nations’ capital like a sports game too, wondering which team will score the most points with voters. Legislation becomes a football to keep away from the other side and Americans get lost in the playbook,” Jill said, according to The Hill.

“Governing does have one thing in common with sports. When you get knocked down, you get back up. When you lose, you work harder and you come back for more,” she later added. “Joe doesn’t quit, he doesn’t give up, he is keeping his promise to rebuild our middle class and he knows that community colleges do just that.”

Jill can try to sugarcoat this all she wants to, but in the end, it is yet another unfulfilled promise from the Biden administration.
