A woman who has become famous on Instagram for making her face look like a “Zombie Angelina Jolie” has been sentenced to ten years in an Iranian prison for her activities on social media.

The New York Post reported that Sahar Tabar, 19, whose real name is Fatemeh Khishvand, had garnered almost 500,000 followers for the eery images she was posting of her face. Her lawyer has confirmed that his client was sentenced to 10 years in prison a few days ago after being charged with corruption of young people and disrespect for the Islamic Republic.

Tabar had previously been arrested in October of last year along with three other Instagram influencers for blasphemy and inciting violence. Though she was later cleared of these charges, Iranian state TV broadcast her confession to the nation last year.

Her lawyers tried to get her released from prison back in April after she contracted COVID-19, and her Instagram account was deactivated.

“Her joke landed her in jail," Iranian journalist and activist Masih Alinejad tweeted. “Her mother cries every day to get her innocent daughter freed.”

Mental records show that Tabar had a mental illness, with a history of visits to psychiatric hospitals, which makes her sentence all the more disturbing. Alinejad went on to make an appeal directly to Jolie to help get Jabar freed.

"I call on Angelina Jolie to help an Iranian 19-year-old girl who received 10 years prison sentence for using makeup & Photoshop to turn herself into Angelina," the activist said. "Islamic Republic has a history of tormenting women. We need to be united against this gender apartheid."

Daily Mail reported that Tabar has previously admitted to having had some plastic surgery such as a nose job, lip fillers and liposuction. However, she has insisted that most of her unusual appearance is due to make-up and editing.

"This is Photoshop and makeup," she once said. "Every time I publish a photo, I paint my face in an increasingly funny way. It is a way of expressing yourself, a kind of art. My fans know that this is not my real face."

"I did not even think about being like Jolie. Also, I did not want to resemble the cartoon character the Corpse Bride," she added. "Now I understand that I have something to do with them, but I am a muse myself and remembering someone is not an end in itself."
