The Supreme Court announced on Monday that it will hear the Mississippi case which is a direct challenge to Roe V. Wade. The Supreme Court will review Mississippi's ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, which has been blocked by lower courts since 2018 when it was enacted. When hearing the case, the justices will be considering whether or not banning abortions prior to the point of the fetus being viable are unconstitutional.

With the Supreme Court having a conservative majority it will be interesting to see if they will overturn Roe V. Wade, which prohibits states from banning abortion before a fetus is viable. Mississippi, along with multiple other Republican states have attempted to ban abortions early on in pregnancy. While the states knew the ban would be rejected by the lower courts, they were hoping it would give the Supreme Court an opportunity to revisit Roe V. Wade.

There are exceptions to the Mississippi ban on abortion which include medical emergencies and severe fetal abnormalities. However, rape and incest are not part of the exceptions. The Mississippi Attorney General had asked the Supreme Court to hear the case back in the fall. The Supreme Court had pushed off a decision on whether or not to hear the case more than a dozen times. On Friday during a closed door conference the Court decided that they would hear the case.
