An interview was released on Monday with Pope Francis that appeared to reaffirm the pro-life stance of the Catholic religion, the Catholic Herald reported.

Despite some politicians who claim to be Catholic and yet push for a woman’s “right” to end a life growing inside of her, such as Nancy Pelosi, Pope Francis again stated that a fetus is a human being. Abortion, then, he said, is ending the life of a human to “solve a problem.”

The church’s problem “arises when this reality of killing a human being is transformed into a political question,” the Pope said, “or when a pastor of the church uses political categories. When I see a problem like this one, which is a crime, become strongly, intensely political, there is a failure of pastoral care in approaching this problem. We cannot deal with (abortion) as if it is only a civil matter.”

Although taking a strong stance, the Pope did not clarify how the leader of a church could teach on the matter in a way that is “pastoral but not political.”

He also did not offer an opinion on whether abortion should be a priority for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to address, saying, instead, that it should be left up to the bishops themselves. “This is a problem the bishops’ conference has to resolve within itself,” he said. “What interests me is the relationship of the bishop with the people, which is sacramental. The sacramental part of the pastoral ministry is in the relationship between the pastor and the people of God, between the bishop and his people. And this cannot be delegated to the bishops’ conference.

“Jesus did not create bishops’ conferences. Jesus created bishops, and each bishop is pastor of his people.”

Last September, the Pope likened abortion to hiring a “hit man” to take out a child. “It is a life. A human life. Some say, ‘It’s not a person.’ It is a human life!” he said at the time.

In May of this year, San Francisco’s Roman Catholic archbishop Salvatore Cordileone told Pelosi that she was banned from receiving Holy Communion because of her outspoken stance on being pro-abortion. “A Catholic legislator who supports procured abortion, after knowing the teaching of the Church, commits a manifestly grave sin which is a cause of most serious scandal to others,” the archbishop said at the time. “Therefore, universal Church law provides that such persons ‘are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.’ I am hereby notifying you that you are not to present yourself for Holy Communion and, should you do so, you are not to be admitted to Holy Communion until such time as you publicly repudiate your advocacy for the legitimacy of abortion and confess and receive absolution of this grave sin in the sacrament of Penance.”

Cordileone continued that Pelosi’s work to codify abortion into United States law has made him speaking out about his decision imminent. “With her advocacy for codifying the Roe decision into federal law,” he said, “it’s becoming more and more extreme, and more and more aggressive. And I’ve been trying to speak with her about this. So I’ve been debating this within my own conscience for many years. Actually, this is not something that’s just come up recently. I’ve been discerning this. I’ve consulted with people whom I respect for their intelligence, their integrity, and their pastoral sensitivity, who would have different sorts of perspectives on the situation to get their thinking on it. I’ve done a lot of prayer and fasting. So I’ve been struggling with this for a long time.”

More recently, in October of this year, the Pope was widely criticized for appointing a pro-abortionist to the Pontifical Academy for Life. Economist Mariana Mazzucato was appointed with the hopes of, the Pope said, encouraging “debate and dialogue … between people of different backgrounds.”
